Instead of more bear talk, I thought we’d get back to some essential recipes this week.
I’m happy to report that bear activity has slowed down, so I have had time to do something other than deal with bears, chase bears, fix my chicken coop repeatedly, and talk about bears!
Since the bear spray incident and setting up an electric fence over the weekend, we have had no incidents near the house. My son chased 2 of the largest bears he’s ever seen last night, on the other end of the property, but thus far, they haven’t come this way. I’m praying it stays that way!!
If you are wondering what I’m talking about because you missed the last couple of weeks, you can find those articles here and here. Or click on the links below…
And…
Because of all this extra time I’ve had not hanging out with bears, I have started in on some spring-cleaning projects.
If your place is anything like mine, this means bugs.
Besides rodents and wasps, spiders are the creatures I find everywhere on my property: inside, outside, in outbuildings, in my window sills, light fixtures, etc…
While cleaning one of my outbuildings this week, I found not only spiders but egg sacs as well. I don’t mind the odd spider at all. But nests and lots of thick sticky webbing make me feel all creepy-crawly!
Of course, washing whatever surface you can manage is the best first step. But I was wondering if there is a way we can maintain a spider-free existence a little longer, especially in the house and in hard-to-reach places.
And voilà! I found a DIY spider spray made with essential oils and things I already had around the place! AND… I am happy to report that it works! In fact, the essential oils discussed below even help on their own.
Peppermint is one of the oils spiders dislike, and I found that sprinkling it around my rooms and on my window sills is almost magical in terms of how much it helps keep those webs down.
Spiders are necessary creatures in our ecosystem and serve many purposes, including eating other bugs we don’t want around, and being an important food source for other animals like birds, reptiles and amphibians.
But if you find you seem to have an infestation, and they are getting into your house more often than seems normal, there are things you can do.
