For my entire life, I have suffered from dry skin and related skin issues.
As a kid, my skin was so dry, my hands and feet used to crack and bleed. My mom did not have dry skin and didn’t seem to quite grasp the kind of discomfort I was in, so there wasn’t much for body hydration products around, except for some cheap lotions that didn’t quite cut it, and good old Vaseline, because that is what my dad used on his extremely dehydrated feet.
I also had Psoriasis all over my body for my entire life. It wasn’t just around elbows or knees, like it is for many people. It really was on my whole body except my back and chest.
It was so bad I used to be scared to show any skin, which is entirely tragic to have hanging over you when you should be enjoying that youthful body. Pool parties? I think not! The sad part about that (besides all the fun I missed out on) is that my skin did better with a bit of exposure to sun and air. But I usually didn’t even give it a chance, especially in my adolescent years.
I was super self-conscious and assumed no man would ever want to touch me. “Oh, brother!” is all I have to say to my past self! I was so much harder on myself than I needed to be.
But I had mean friends who told me stuff like “your skin is gross, no one will ever want to touch you, etc”, and I believed them. My mom didn’t understand my issues, so she wasn’t helpful. I didn’t have the idea to see a doctor on my own when I was young. So I suffered in silence and with a lot of layers.
Well, low and behold, guys liked me once I gave them the chance, and on top of that, I got married at 21, with skin issues and all! It turns out most men are much kinder to me than I am to myself, and far less picky about imperfections than I would have assumed.
By my 20s I had a new doctor and I did try to seek answers for all my skin issues. So many different products were sampled, and they were all ineffective for the most part, at least long term. Until my brother became an Arbonne rep, I never had a good quality hydration product, but once I did, things slowly began to change for me. But this stuff was expensive, and although it improved, it still didn’t take away my Psoriasis as much as I’d hoped, even though my dry skin was finally less of a thing.
